Cuban Olympic Sailing Team Reunited Racing with Disabled Sailors on Biscayne Bay
Miami, Florida – November 15, 2010 – Team Paradise Sailing Academy is bringing together legendary sailors from around the globe to race on Biscayne Bay as part of the Calle Ocho Regatta Series. This regatta will stand out from the rest. World-class athletes will be racing on mixed-teams with physically disabled sailors.
Team Paradise has partnered with Shake-A-Leg Miami to help enable those with physical and developmental challenges to empower themselves through sailing. The Calle Ocho Regatta is a series of short-course races that take place each week on beautiful Biscayne Bay in Miami, Florida, with the final race coinciding with the annual Calle Ocho Festival. Each team must have at least one disabled crew member.
The next event is Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Shake-A-Leg Watersports Center located at 2620 S. Bayshore Dr., Miami, FL 33133 (on the East side of S. Bayshore Dr., between the Fresh Market and Monty’s Bar). Parking is Free!
Some of the renowned sailors include Cuban athlete and current Snipe Western Hemisphere Champion, Ernesto Rodriguez, and his coach from the 1996 Cuban Olympic Sailing Team, Gabriel Alvarez, past Rolex Yachtsman of the Year, Augie Diaz, and Roberto Lizano. There will be other legendary Cuban sailors teaming up with US Olympic Gold medalist Magnus Liljedahl, members of the US Disabled Sailing Team, members of the US Sailing Team, US Blind National Champions, Janice Bartleson and JP Creignou, US Disabled Veterans of War and volunteer sailing instructors from Shake-A-Leg Miami and the Team Paradise Sailing Academy.
The event promotes not only disabled sailing, but the Team Paradise Sailing Academy, which features a sailing school and boat rental, with classes for sailors of all levels from beginner to advanced. All proceeds from the Academy are dedicated to helping fulfill the organization’s mission to “Provide Paralympic Equipment and Coaching Support to Disabled and Blind Athletes from around the Globe.”
