Instructions (Sailing Miami, or elsewhere):
• Begin drill (green circle) by sailing a starboard beam-reach (true-wind direction) with orange
marker straight astern. Utilize line-sight, masthead-fly and or compass, if available.
• Bear off to dead down-wind. Establish sight-line and check with compass and masthead-fly.
• Gybe and continue on a port dead-run (no course change is needed, other than a quick turn to gybe).
• Head up to a port tack beam reach. No windward gain is made. This course is parallel to the starboard beam reach previously sailed.
• Identify when the marker is directly up-wind.
• Continue a short while, then head up to a close hauled course.
• Tack to starboard when, the starboard, close hauled tack aims 2-3 boat lengths below the mark.
• Head straight in to wind and coast past the mark, leaving it to starboard.
• Allow the boat to come to an almost complete stop before back-winding the jib in order to facilitate bearing off on starboard tack beam reach.
• Repeat the drill making each leg shorter and shorter.
