Veterans Sailing is back, and the enthusiasm is infectious! After a long stretch, we're finally seeing a spark of excitement that hasn't been this bright since before COVID.
We originally had six veterans signed up for this week's outing, planning to use two boats. As it turned out, we had a perfect four-person crew make it out onto the water in one boat, and what a session it was!
Hands-On at the Helm
Coach Ella did a great job managing the session, ensuring everyone got valuable time at the helm. The energy on the water was incredible—everyone was fully engaged in the work of sailing the boat. It wasn't just about steering, either. The crew worked together seamlessly on the other essential tasks: hoisting and trimming the sails, and executing the synchronized dance of moving from side to side on the boat during tacking. Seeing the crew, some new to the sport, work as a cohesive unit is what this program is all about. Sailing is truly a team sport where communication and focus are key.
More Than Just a Sail
This program is about more than just getting out on the water; it's about community, focus, and rehabilitation. The sense of camaraderie and the pure focus required to sail a boat are incredibly therapeutic. The water has a way of washing away distractions and giving you something tangible and immediate to concentrate on. We could see the tension lift and the smiles widen as the veterans took control of the vessel.
Essential Partnerships
We owe a huge thank you to the Miami VA, which plays an essential role in spreading the word among the Veteran population. Their support and connection to the community are vital for getting this incredible opportunity into the hands of those who need it most. We look forward to seeing this momentum continue and getting even more veterans out on the water!
Why sailing?
For veterans with disabilities, sailing is used as a holistic therapy to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or depression. Sailing can even have long term effects on veterans who struggle with these ailments and helps to improve their overall quality of life. Being on the water promotes a healthy and active body, but did you know studies show that outdoor activities can help with various mental health issues? Sailing is an activity that brings people together and allows them to explore their own inner strength and courage. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or just learning the ropes, sailing is an activity that can bring joy to all who take part in it. Not only will you be able to marvel at the beauty of nature around you, but you'll also get a deeper understanding of yourself and your capabilities.
