VETERANS ADAPTIVE SAILING

Sailing is an ideal sport for people with physical or visual disabilities because it is more of a mental sport with physical interactions than a purely physical sport.

Sailing allows the disabled population to interact in a natural way with able-bodied individuals. Adaptation equipment compensates for physical disabilities, allowing participation on an equal basis with able-bodied sailors.

Sailors with disabilities gain skills to cruise around the bay and/or compete on an international level. Sailing is one of the few sports where people with disabilities can win open events against able-bodied competitors!

Sailing develops societal skills such as leadership, teamwork and self-reliance.  Racing sailboats requires knowledge of the elements, and strategy, tactics and racing rules are other important components needed to master the sport.

Camaraderie, Support and Therapeutic Sailing

Our Thursday Sailing program runs from 10 AM to 2 PM. One Thursday per month is dedicated to Miami VA Hospital only. Veterans and First Responders are offered a 100% discount using coupon code SAIL-2024. For Disabled Veterans, unless introduced by the Miami VA Hospital, please bring the VA-ID card or send us a copy. All Veterans and First Responders are welcome.

Sailing is a great sport for veterans! It provides the opportunity for camaraderie and teamwork experienced while serving in the military. Therapy administered by nature…..What could be better than that?

Our program is designed to progress participants up a pyramid of development. No prior sailing skills are required. It is the choice of the participant as to how far they would like to move up the level of development. We offer weekly sailing throughout the year. There is an opportunity to attain US Sailing’s Basic Keelboat certification and move on to graduate from our Performance and Spinnaker Endorsement course.
