THERAPEUTIC SAILING
Today, we had six veterans out on the water, sailing in two boats with Coach Ella and me.
The wind forecast called for northeasterly winds of 10 to 15 knots. We started the session by sailing on a long port tack towards the west point of Key Biscayne, then turned north towards downtown.
As it turned out, we ended up sailing directly underneath the Rickenbacker Causeway bridge. We made it all the way to Brickell without taking a single tack! I’m not a golfer, but this is exactly what a hole-in-one feels like when you’re sailing.
The previous time we sailed to Brickell, we continued to the mouth of the Miami River before turning around. Today, however, we decided to make a tack early and head towards Virginia Key to check out the Marine Stadium, instead.
Time flies when you’re having fun. We had a scheduled turnaround to return to Port by 2 PM.
Both boats sailed close together the entire time. We communicated all along, both on VHF radios and by hailing. Having multiple boats is definitely more fun than going out with only one!
(BTW, tack is the term for turning the bow of the boat through the wind). Relive our journey
Thank Frank
We recognize Frank's exceptional generosity. His support is fundamental to our mission, enabling us to provide the therapeutic Veterans Program and the valuable US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification Course, which directly impacts the lives of these veterans. Thank you for making this possible, Frank!
Special thanks to returning veteran, MacKenzie Savoy!
Why sailing?
For veterans with disabilities, sailing is used as a holistic therapy to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or depression. Sailing can even have long term effects on veterans who struggle with these ailments and helps to improve their overall quality of life. Being on the water promotes a healthy and active body, but did you know studies show that outdoor activities can help with various mental health issues? Sailing is an activity that brings people together and allows them to explore their own inner strength and courage. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or just learning the ropes, sailing is an activity that can bring joy to all who take part in it. Not only will you be able to marvel at the beauty of nature around you, but you'll also get a deeper understanding of yourself and your capabilities.
