Smooth Sailing for Our Heroes

Our Thursday Sailing program offers a vital therapeutic experience for our veterans and first responders. The proverb, "You can’t control the wind, but you can adjust your sails," could not be truer. For our participants, the destination matters, but the journey—finding a smooth, soothing course—matters just as much.

The weather forecast for today was less than appealing, with a small craft advisory in effect from 6 AM this morning to Noon today. Wind conditions: NW winds 15 to 20 kt with Bay water choppy and high tide at 4:52 PM. Sure enough, some of the veterans contacted me via text message to confirm we were still on. My reply was firm: “No cancellation is expected.” The wind was forecast to drop, and a gentle breeze from the northwest promised a flatter sea state with smaller waves.

Ella and I each captained a couple of our Sonars, carrying a valued crew of six veterans. We exited the harbor area through the famous Seaplane Channel. After briefly consulting on the VHF radio, we agreed on our float plan: to sail to the mouth of the Miami River and back.

The reward is in the journey!

Our outbound route took us underneath the Rickenbacker Causeway, along the dynamic Brickell waterfront, and halfway around Clayton Island. We spent the first half of the trip intentionally fighting the incoming flooding current. However, the “reward is in the journey”! The return trip was the opposite. As we turned back, we took full advantage of the flooding tide — it felt like hopping onto a conveyor belt. The smooth, effortless flow it provided gave us a fast ride home.

We returned to Port promptly at 2 PM. As is our custom, we finished with a debriefing and refreshments on the second-floor breezeway at the US Sailing Center, reflecting on how, even on a rough day, we found the strength to adjust and sail smoothly.

Relive our journey

Special thanks to returning veteran, MacKenzie Savoy!

Why sailing?

For veterans with disabilities, sailing is used as a holistic therapy to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or depression. Sailing can even have long term effects on veterans who struggle with these ailments and helps to improve their overall quality of life. Being on the water promotes a healthy and active body, but did you know studies show that outdoor activities can help with various mental health issues? Sailing is an activity that brings people together and allows them to explore their own inner strength and courage. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or just learning the ropes, sailing is an activity that can bring joy to all who take part in it. Not only will you be able to marvel at the beauty of nature around you, but you'll also get a deeper understanding of yourself and your capabilities.
